Hello! My name is Tyler, and I’m a Graphic Designer

Whether I’m doing print, photography, illustration, or Web, my passion is creating enjoyable and functional design. Being able to start out with an idea and watch it come to life is one of the most exciting things to experience.

When I’m not glued to my computer screen, you can probably find me out by the lake or off in the woods. If for some reason the nature I seek is unavailable, I’m probably lost in a superhero tale, a fantasy adventure, or an action packed sci-fi story (I’m a nerd).

I love learning new things, and meeting new people, so if you have an exciting opportunity or just want to learn more, don’t hesitate to give me a shout.

Victor Mouse Traps: Package Design

For this project, I was tasked with redesigning the mouse trap packaging. I used all of the information from the previous package, but came up with a new layout and physical package.

The previous packaging was plastic and could only be used once. I decided to make the new package a box, in the matchbox style, to allow it to be resealed and be more sturdy than the previous.

Seeing as the wood from the trap itself only comes from well managed forests, I believed it was a good idea to use a recycled stock.

A limited color palette was used, as well as bits of humor here and there to lighten the mood of removing small, pesky creatures from your home.

Borrow Buddy: App Design

This project called for me to come up with an idea for an app, name it, decide all of its features, and design the screens.

Borrow Buddy keeps track of borrowed and lent items in a simple, user-friendly way. It’s a straightforward app that makes friend-to-friend transactions easy and fun.

The basic borrower’s name and picture, the item description and picture, and the due dates are all included. This app also has features that none of the competitors do, including a sign and shake screen and location based reminders.

The design of Borrow Buddy was kept clean and simple to ensure a good user experience. The colors are simple, but include an orange to liven it up and add some fun to the overall design.

Gander Mountain: Seasonal Retail

This project involved developing a seasonal retail campaign for an established company. I chose to do Gander Mountain and went with the season of summer.

For the design, I thought of activities that people would do throughout summer. I decided upon three different options: fishing, camping, and hunting. For each of these I developed an illustration, an icon, and its own set of colors.

From there, I created gift cards, hangtags, t-shirts, and shopping bags. Each item has three varieties, one for each activity. This allows for customers to choose based on their favorite activity.

The main idea idea was to get people excited for summer activities and get them outside.

Dark Horse: Website Design

For this project, I was tasked with developing a new image for the Dark Horse Comics website. I created three pages: the home page, the comics page, and a product specifics page.

The overall design is meant to be fun and really push what the website is all about, comics. The layout features a black and white section of comic storyboards. All of the information boxes are laid over as if they are actually a part of the comic.

Keeping the background in black and white allowed for the art of the comics, and the art from the banners to really stand out. The oversized nature of the banners and the footer really draw attention as well.

Overall, the site is both a fun experience and easy to use.

Shamrock Run: Event Rebrand

This project involved rebranding a run that takes place in Portland, Oregon every year. The run is a fun event, but also has a specific purpose. A portion of the proceeds go to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

I created a variety of different pieces for this project, including: the logo, a runner’s bib, apparel, a finisher’s medal, a print ad, a vehicle wrap, and a website.

The location of the event played a big part in the design process. From the print ad, to the unique vehicle wrap, Portland had an influence on the ideas behind each piece.

The overall design uses a cool color scheme with hits of green to play on the shamrock aspect of the run. Clean illustrations are used for a few of the pieces, and a subtle texture is used throughout.

Wildlife Haven: Nonprofit Rebrand

For this project, I was tasked with rebranding a nonprofit. I chose Wildlife Haven, a nonprofit that is dedicated to rescuing and informing the public on Ohio’s native wildlife.

This project also called for a number of pieces, such as: a refreshed logo, brochure, business cards, thank you cards, print ads, t-shirts, and a website.

The design uses a few brown tones due to the “nature” of the project (See what I did there?). Yellow is also used, but it only appears in the logo.

The type is one of the most interesting parts of the design. It was kept rough to keep with the natural colors and the idea of wildlife. Photography is used in the print ads, but the other pieces are kept simple.

A Voyage to Terra Australis:
Book Cover

This project was based around an illustration. I had to develop an illustration and apply it to a project of my choosing.

The book I chose is called A Voyage to Terra Australis. It is the story of how Matthew Flinders, who is also the author, circumnavigated Australia.

I illustrated the ship used on the front, a nautical style compass in the passage flap, and a frame to go around the authors picture. I also did the book title, author’s name, and date of the passage on the inside flap by hand, using a typeface as a base and roughing it up a little.

My inspiration for this project came from the intricate line work of scrimshaw. This is why I used only line work with great detail.
